Manteo Main Street is dedicated to strengthening downtown Manteo as a vibrant place to live, work, shop, visit, and invest. Through partnerships, strategic planning, community engagement, and preservation-based economic development, the program works to build on Manteo’s unique character while supporting a thriving and sustainable downtown economy.
As a designated North Carolina Main Street community, Manteo uses the nationally recognized Main Street Approach™ to guide downtown revitalization efforts. This comprehensive framework brings together businesses, property owners, residents, local government, volunteers, and community organizations to create meaningful and lasting improvements.
Manteo Main Street celebrates the assets that make our community distinctive—from our historic downtown, waterfront, maritime heritage, and locally owned businesses to the people and organizations that contribute to Manteo’s strong sense of place.
The Main Street Approach™
Manteo Main Street’s work is organized around four complementary areas:
Economic Vitality
Economic Vitality focuses on strengthening and diversifying downtown’s economic base. This includes supporting existing businesses, encouraging entrepreneurship, attracting investment, identifying new market opportunities, and promoting the sustainable use of downtown properties.
Design
Design supports the preservation and enhancement of Manteo’s historic character and physical appearance. Efforts may include downtown beautification, historic preservation, public spaces, streetscape improvements, wayfinding, façade enhancements, and projects that create a welcoming and attractive environment.
Promotion
Promotion tells Manteo’s story and creates reasons for people to visit, shop, dine, explore, and invest downtown. Through the Meet Me in Manteo brand, events, marketing initiatives, business promotions, and community storytelling, the program highlights the experiences and businesses that make Manteo special.
Organization
Organization brings people together to advance a shared vision for downtown. Strong partnerships, community engagement, volunteer involvement, strategic planning, and effective program management help build the capacity needed to accomplish long-term goals.
